Reflexology at About Balance Brighton

Reflexology is a non-invasive, gentle therapy, and is suitable for all ages to maintain general wellbeing and help restore the body to a balanced state of health. Reflexology supports both physical and emotional health. It is based on the principle that the feet are a reflection of the body. Reflexology is not a foot massage, but a systematic foot therapy whereby specific reflex points on the feet are stimulated with thumb walking, thereby creating a direct response in a related body area. The body is always working to balance itself and reflexology works to create this balance (homeostasis). Imbalances within the body are thought to lead to ailments and physical problems. In reflexology we look to restore the body’s natural rhythm and thereby restore its own ability to heal.

Reflexology as a complementary therapy can be used very effectively alongside other medical approaches. The benefits of a reflexology treatment go beyond relaxation. Regular treatments are proven to help with:

Hormonal imbalances such as menopause and menstrual issues

Boost circulation

Sleep disorders

Digestive issues

Decreasing stress and anxiety

Boost the immune system

Relieve from pain such as migraines

Increase your energy levels

Improves general wellbeing.

Ellen is telling about what to expect during a session of reflexology with her:

During your first session, I will take a short medical history and chat with you about your health, diet and lifestyle and any presenting conditions or ailments you may have. This typically takes about 15 minutes. This information allows me to make a bespoke treatment plan for you.

During the treatment you will take off your shoes and socks for me to work on your feet. You will be reclined on a very comfortable treatment couch and usually covered with a blanket.  The treatment will begin with some gentle relaxation techniques followed by the application of pressure using precise finger and thumb techniques across the different reflexes.  I work across both feet throughout the treatment. All main body systems are covered in order to detect any imbalances which will then help me to devise a bespoke treatment plan specific to your needs. During the treatment, most people tend to feel very relaxed and some may even fall asleep.  There may be some tingling sensations in different parts of the body which is normal. The treatment should not feel ticklish or acutely painful although there may be some discomfort or tenderness in reflexes which show an imbalance.  Many people tend to describe this feeling as “a good pain”. A typical treatment will last 45 minutes and it is generally recommended that you have 4-6 weekly treatments initially, although reflexology is safe to have more frequently if required.  General maintenance sessions are typically monthly.  However, you are under no obligation to book further treatments

Typically, following a treatment, the receiver will feel more relaxed and less stressed. Where appropriate, I also offer after-care advice to ensure you achieve the utmost benefit from your sessions. After the treatment some people may experience what is called “a healing reaction”.  This is the body’s way of dealing with the toxins that are released during the reflexology treatment and may include feeling more thirsty, tired or energetic, increased bowel movement or feeling like they are getting a cold.  This is a normal reaction and symptoms will usually not last more than 24/48 hours.  To help ensure toxins are dispelled from the body and to reduce the likelihood of the healing reaction, you are advised to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol following a reflexology treatment.
